Curaçao lies in the southern part of the Caribbean
Sea. Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire form the Benedenwindse Islands
also called the ABC Islands. Curaçao is the largest
of the three islands and has approx. 145,000 inhabitants
consisting of 52 nationalities. The island is 62km (38.5
miles) long and its width varies from 5 to 14 km (3 to 8.5
miles). Because of the always-present northeast trade winds
it is never too hot having an average temperature of 27.8
degrees Celsius (82F) and an average sea temperature of
27.1 degrees Celsius (81F).
Beginning in the sixties, tourism has become a very important
income source for the island. The district of Jan Thiel
has developed into one of the popular tourist destinations.
Jan Thiel is 5 km (3 miles) east of Willemstad. It is safe,
clean and a short distance from several of the most popular
beaches of the island such as Caracas Bay, Spanish Water
and Jan Thiel Bay. Mambo Beach, Kontiki and Wet and Wild
are also a short distance from Jan Thiel.
In addition to the beaches and the sea; you can enjoy walking,
cycling or horseback riding through the Jan Thiel Zoutpannen
nature area. Of course there are many nice restaurants where
you can eat while enjoying the Caribbean style. Do not forget
to take time for a trip to one of the many country houses,
the caves of Hato, the ostrich farm, the herb garden of
Dina Veeris, the museum of slavery, the Seaquarium and so
on.
The delicious climate and the versatility of the island
make Curaçao a fantastic vacation destination
for all ages.
